INFO
My first studio art class at University of North Georgia was 3D Design during the Fall 2022 semester. It was a class where we made various sculptures from different materials based on the project. We explored open and closed compositions, freestanding or relief, representational and non-representational, and explored the balance between symmetry and asymmetry. I was immediately pulled from the comfort zone of my prior vocational experience, and performed very little drawing or computer work. I was solving new problems by hand and creating art I never thought of before.
My favorite, and possibly best work from this time period was the Scrappy Species project. I went to thrift store in Ellijay, GA and said "give me all of your broken junk and trash." Before I knew it, I was sawing television remotes and egg beaters in half, and utilizing broken or defunct car chargers and even an item scanner from a grocery store. The project seemed to come together instinctively, and my scorpion, The Trashrachnid, was born.
This sculpture received an honorable mention award in the 2024 Hal B. Rhodes III Student Exhibition at University of North Georgia.
